Champaign Illinois


Champaign is centrally located 135 miles south of Chicago, 124 miles west of Indianapolis, and 178 miles northeast of St. Louis. While situated in a picturesque area of rural farm communities, Champaign is home to the University of Illinois which brings all the culture and amenities of a college town. Population: As of the 2010 U.S. Census, 81,055 people resided here.

Climate: Typical of the Midwest, Champaign has hot, humid summers and cold, moderately snowy winters. It gets 38 inches of rain and 23 inches of snowfall per year.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees are always fortunate to find a town with an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Champaign is home to the University of Illinois which hosts this program.

Transportation:Champaign’s bus service has twice been named as the best local transit system in the United States. Amtrak and Greyhound serve the area, as well as a host of commuter transit systems linking Champaign with Chicago and other major airports.

Travel and tourism: Champaign offers urban perks with smaller city comforts. It features an extensive park system, a world-class library, urban shopping choices and a variety of living accommodations. Active retirees will appreciate the excellent local parks and miles of walking and biking opportunities which make Champaign a great place to have fun and stay healthy in retirement.
