Charlotte North Carolina
North Carolinas largest metropolitan area was once called Charlottetowne, named in honor of the British Queen Charlotte Sophia in 1762. No surprise that it is known as the Queen City, and today Charlotte is the largest and most accessible city between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. It is the biggest US banking center after New York. Population: As of 2011 the population of Charlotte was 659,932.
Climate: Nice for retirement, Charlotte gets 44 inches of rain per year and only 4 inches of snow. Its weather pattern is described as being a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons.
Cost of living: Compared to the rest of the country, Charlotte's cost of living is 1.60% lower than the U.S. average.
Housing costs: The median home cost in Charlotte is $178,800.
Colleges and Universities: Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has many classes in which retirees can discover a new hobby, express their creativity, improve their health or pursue other personal goals in its short-term, continuing education programs.
Transportation:The LYNX Blue Line Rail is the first rapid transit system for North Carolina, and connects South Charlotte with Center City museums, entertainment, nightlife, sporting events, and more. The new hybrid-electric Sprinter Bus is the green connection from Center City to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Travel and tourism: Charlotte may have a reputation for its NASCAR roots, but the elegant orchids at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and the Broadway show tunes at Belk Theatre are just a few of the countless reasons retirees will enjoy living here. Options for shopping include everything from high end boutiques featuring labels like Narciso Rodriguez and Michael Kors to local shopping destinations that offer every name in fashion and home décor.
