Chicago is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, the 5th largest body of fresh water in the world. Climate: Chicago has four distinct seasons with hot and humid summers, cold and windy winters, and mild springs and falls. It gets 36 inches of rain per year, and snowfall of 28 inches. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 124.

Cost of living: As with many major cities, Chicago is not a particularly cheap place to live. The cost of living in Chicago is 20% greater than the Illinois average and 14% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Retirement homes are 21% more expensive here than the rest of the U.S. The median home cost in Chicago is $236,600.

Colleges and Universities: Retirement learning is always fun at an OLLI program, and Chicago has one at its Northwestern campus. Here members ranging in age from their 50s to 90s can enjoy a comprehensive curriculum of peer-led study groups spanning subjects from literature and history to science, politics, current affairs, philosophy, and the arts.

Transportation:As a major transportation hub, Chicago is the third largest inter-modal port in the world after Hong Kong and Singapore. Retirement travel will include unlimited options for air, train, and bus.

Travel and tourism: In Chicago, retirees are sure to find attractions that match their interests and probably develop some new ones as well! Chicago has everything from ballet to baseball to brontosauruses, classical music to political satire, to name a few. Foodies and history buffs will delight in the many restaurants and museums. The nation's first free municipal cultural center, the Chicago Cultural Center, is considered one of the most comprehensive arts showcases in the United States.
