Columbia South Carolina


Columbia was named for Christopher Columbus, and as the state capital it is the center of a metropolitan statistical area of 767,598, the largest within the state. It was named by CNNMoney.com as one of America's 25 best places to retire. Population: Columbia had 129,272 residents according to the 2010 census.

Climate: Columbia has mild winters, warm springs and autumns, and very hot and humid summers. It gets 45 inches of rain per year and only about 1 inch of snowfall on average.

Cost of living: US News & World Report ranked Columbia number 6 on its 2009 list of America's Best Affordable Places to Retire in 2009. The cost of living here is 5% less than the national average.

Housing costs: Even better, the average cost of a retirement home is 28% less than the national average. The median home value in Columbia is $155,600.

Colleges and Universities: Retirement learning is enhanced by South Carolina law which provides tuition exemption for residents 60 and older to take classes at state colleges (nominal fees may apply). Retirement learners can generally take any class offered, but many colleges also have specialized senior learning programs. One such program is at the University of South Carolina Columbia.

Transportation:Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority operates express shuttles, as well as bus service serving Columbia and its immediate suburbs. Columbia Metropolitan Airport offers connections to all major cities.

Travel and tourism: Examples of some of the many things to do in Columbia are: concerts at the Colonial Center, an ice show at the Carolina Coliseum, Broadway shows at the Koger Center, a national dance touring company at The Township, a regatta at Lake Murray, a replica of a three ton white shark at the State Museum, historic homes from the 16th century, a walk through the tallest trees on the East Coast in the Congaree National Park, and tailgating at a University of South Carolina football game.
