Columbia was named for Christopher Columbus, and as the state capital it is the center of a metropolitan statistical area of 767,598, the largest within the state. It was named by CNNMoney.com as one of America's 25 best places to retire. Population: Columbia had 129,272 residents according to the 2010 census.
Climate: Columbia has mild winters, warm springs and autumns, and very hot and humid summers. It gets 45 inches of rain per year and only about 1 inch of snowfall on average.

Colleges and Universities: Retirement learning is enhanced by South Carolina law which provides tuition exemption for residents 60 and older to take classes at state colleges (nominal fees may apply). Transportation:Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority operates express shuttles, as well as bus service serving Columbia and its immediate suburbs. Columbia Metropolitan Airport offers connections to all major cities.
