Fargo North Dakota

Lewis and Clark spent more time in what is now North Dakota than any other state during their epic journey. The railroad’s arrival in the 1870s brought thousands of settlers taking advantage of the Homestead Act. No surprise: One in eight were from Norway. In 2011, Forbes Magazine selected Fargo as having one of "America's Most Transformed Neighborhoods" for exceptional improvements in the downtown area. Population: As of the 2010 census, Fargo’s population was 105,549 with an estimated metropolitan population of 208,777.

Climate: Fargo has long, cold, windy, and snowy winters with snowfall averaging 46 inches per year. It gets 21 inches of rain per year.

Cost of living: The cost of living in Fargo is 6% less than the national average.

Housing costs: Retirement homes are also affordable at 17% less than the national average. The median home cost in Fargo is $140,900.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees will want to check out North Dakota State University’s Distance & Continuing Education programs for learning in retirement. Transportation: Hector International Airport offers daily flights to connect to other major cities. Amtrak’s Empire Builder passenger train serves Fargo, and Fargo Moorhead Metro Area Transit (MAT) operates several local bus routes.

Travel and tourism: Reputed to be the least-visited state in the US, North Dakota has many outdoor pursuits for retirement such as hunting, windsurfing and birdwatching. Fargo was selected as one of 151 "2011 Playful City USA" for activities including Streets Alive, GoFar events and many others.
