Gary is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and on three major Interstate highways, at the Crossroads of America. It is 25 miles from downtown Chicago, and is considered a part of Chicagoland. It was named after the chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary, and its economy has always been linked to this industry. Population: Gary’s population was 80,294 at the 2010 census.

Climate: The climate is predominantly continental; however this effect is partially modified by Lake Michigan. The average annual precipitation is 34.66 inches (39.2 inches of snowfall).

Transportation:Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District operates a commuter rail system between Chicago and South Bend. Gary/Chicago International Airport functions as the "third airport" for the Chicago area.

Travel and tourism: Many Baby Boomers can sing along with Meredith Willson's 1957 Broadway musical “The Music Man” which featured the song "Gary, Indiana". The city was the original home of The Jacksons (Michael et al). Gary’s lakefront has two gaming boats and three recreational beaches.
