Also known as the Insurance Capital of the World, the U.S.’s oldest insurance company still operates in the city as the Hartford Insurance Company. It is also home to many other large insurance companies, such as Aetna and Travelers. Population: As of 2011, Hartford's population was 122,378 people. Greater Hartford has a population of 1,212,381.

Climate: Hartford receives 42 inches of rain per year, and 32 inches of snowfall. Winters are obviously cold, and summers are typically hot and muggy.

Housing costs: The median home value in Hartford is $151,500, fairly reasonable for a retirement home.

Colleges and Universities: U Conn has an impressive Center for Learning in Retirement at several of its campuses. Its mission is to provide meaningful and serious intellectual activities for retired men and women from all walks of life, conducted in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Transportation:Bradley International Airport is just 20 minutes north of town. Amtrak serves the city with train service. CT Transit runs all the city buses in the area, and Peter Pan runs regular busses out of Hartford to 85 different destinations in the northeast.

Travel and tourism: A quote by Mark Twain describing the city goes like this: "Of all the beautiful towns it has been my fortune to see, this is the chief." Retirees will enjoy visiting the nation’s oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, founded in 1844. College towns are popular retirement destinations, since there is always something happening on and around campus.
