Hilo Hawaii


Hilo is located on The Big Island, and is home to active volcanoes, orchid farms, and a rugged coast line. Gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Hilo region has dramatic waterfalls, fertile rainforests and lush, blooming gardens. Downtown Hilo is built around its crescent-shaped bay. Population: As of 2011, Hilo's population was 44,224 people.

Climate: Located on the eastern side of Hawaii, Hilo is the third wettest designated city in the United States. It gets a staggering 128 inches of rain per year.

Transportation:Hilo International Airport provides air transportation, and the Hele-On Bus offers free rides to seniors.

Travel and tourism: In addition to being a tropical paradise, Hilo is home to great museums, art galleries, unique shops and a favorite with retirees - the Hilo Farmers Market. Its newest world-class attraction is the Imiloa Astronomy Center including interactive exhibits like a “walk” through a koa (native hardwood) forest and a movie presentation that makes viewers feel like they’re flying through space.
