Honolulu Hawaii

Oahu, Hawaii’s State Capital and the southernmost major U.S. city, is sometimes called “The Gathering Place.” As the third largest Hawaiian island, Oahu is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population. Here a fusion of east and west cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people provide contrast between the ancient and the modern. Population: 390,738 residents were counted in Honolulu at the 2010 census, while the population of the city and county was 953,207.

Climate: Honolulu receives 38 inches of rain per year, and of course no snowfall.

Cost of living: Retirement living in Paradise does not come cheap, where compared to the rest of the country, Honolulu's cost of living is 93.50% higher than the U.S. average.

Housing costs: And retirement homes are likewise expensive; the median home cost in Honolulu is $604,400.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees will want to check out the Emeritus College at Honolulu Community College. This center was created to respond to the special educational needs and requirements of senior citizens and of persons near retirement. It is also the first SeniorNet site in Hawaii, a non-profit organization established to create and support a national community of computer-using seniors.

Transportation:Honolulu International Airport is the principal aviation gateway for the entire state of Hawaii. TheBus operates 107 routes serving Honolulu and outlying areas on Oahu, and has been twice honored by the American Public Transportation Association as "America's Best Transit System" for 1994–1995 and 2000–2001.

Travel and tourism: Honolulu is the vibrant epicenter of Hawaii where the retiree will find everything from historic landmarks and treasured monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and culture scene. Waikiki, once a playground for Hawaiian royalty, is now a gathering place for visitors from around the world. In addition to Honolulu’s many museums and cultural offerings, it has the only royal palace in the USA, and has become a foodie heaven of cheap noodle joints and fancy Pacific Rim cuisine.
