Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida, and the eleventh largest in the United States. By land area, it is also the largest city in the U.S. It is located on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles south of the Georgia border and 340 miles north of Miami. The oldest remnants of pottery in the United States have been found here, dating back to 2500 BC. The French arrived in 1562, and Spanish and British also occupied it at one time.
