Joplin Missouri

Joplin is located in southwest Missouri at the edge of the Ozark Mountain region, in the "four states" area that includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. Joplin achieved national notoriety on May 22, 2011 when it was struck by an extremely powerful EF-5 tornado, resulting in at least 160 deaths and more than 900 injuries, along with total destruction of thousands of houses and businesses. Population: Joplin’s current population is 49,024, with a metropolitan area of nearly 400,000 within a 40-mile radius.

Climate: Joplin has mild to cold winters and hot, humid summers. It is, not surprisingly, situated in an area called "Tornado Alley".

Transportation:Joplin Regional Airport provides service to Dallas/Fort Worth, with many daily flights operated by American Eagle Airlines http://www.aa.com/. The Sunshine Lamp Trolley still operates for local service.

Travel and tourism: In the aftermath of the deadly tornado, progress is being made daily and the "Miracle of the Human Spirit" is alive and well in Joplin as it rises from the rubble.
