Lake Tahoe California
Lake Tahoe experienced huge growth and popularity in the 1950s and 60s which positioned the area as a year-round playground. Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful lakes in the US, and also its second deepest with an average depth of 1000ft. The 72-mile drive around the lake is breathtaking. Population: South Lake Tahoe's population was 23,503 as of 2011.
Climate: Most of Lake Tahoes precipitation falls as snow, and although summers are warm, there can be frost in every month of the year so gardening in retirement at this high elevation is tricky. South Lake Tahoe receives 12 inches of rain per year, and snowfall of 64 inches.
Cost of living: South Lake Tahoe's cost of living is 22.40% higher than the U.S. average.
Housing costs: The median cost of a retirement home in South Lake Tahoe is $283,500.
Colleges and Universities: A variety of courses are available for retirees at Sierra Nevada College/Incline Village Lifelong Learning Program which allows residents over the age of 60 to register (space available) in up to three undergraduate classes on a non-degree seeking basis with very reasonable tuition.
Transportation:Reno/Tahoe International is the closest airport, and Greyhound and Amtrak have services to Truckee and Reno, where retirees can catch local buses to most Lake Tahoe towns. If youre driving, be sure to carry chains during the winter months!
Travel and tourism: Sunshine bestows its blessings on Tahoe three out of four days in the year, making it ideal for outdoor pursuits of all types such as swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and other water-based activities in the summer, as well as hiking and camping. And of course, winter brings lots of snow, offering skiing at more than a dozen resorts. Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada border, so retirees who enjoy gaming have access to many high rolling casinos with entertainment and fine dining just across the state line.
