Memphis has been the center of the universe for blues and rock music since the 1950s when local recording company Sun Records cut tracks for blues, soul, R & B and rockabilly artists. Known as the Bluff City, Memphis is located on a substantial bluff rising from the Mississippi River. Population: The largest city in the state of Tennessee, Memphis had a population of 662,897 as of the 2010 census.

Travel and tourism: Memphis is famous for two things: musical history and BBQ pork. Retirees will enjoy venues dedicated to Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Isaac Hayes, as well as taste testing slow-cooked pork: dry versus wet, rib versus pulled. For retirees who want something in addition to the food and music scene, the Lichterman Nature Center has recently completed an expansion project that includes a visitors center, nature store, special events pavilion and lawn, improved nature trails and amphitheater, and new lake boardwalks.
