Monterey Salinas California

Together with its immediate neighbor Pacific Grove and posh Carmel to the south, Monterey is a place famous for its beauty, golf, galleries and aquarium. California’s Hispanic heritage has been richly preserved, and there are numerous lovingly restored adobe buildings from the Spanish and Mexican periods in the town’s historic quarter to explore. Being a waterfront community with a temperate climate year-round, retirement activities in Monterey can also include kayaking, scuba diving, surfing, whale watching and beach-going. Population: The population was 27,810 as of the 2010 census.

Climate: Monterey gets 20 inches of rain per year, and there are 267 sunny days for retirees to enjoy golfing at such prestigious resorts as Pebble Beach.

Cost of living: Not for retirees living off Social Security, the cost of living in Monterey is 52% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Housing is likewise very expensive at 271% higher than the national average. Even with the downturn in the housing market, the median home cost in Monterey is $662,800.

Colleges and Universities: The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at CSU Monterey Bay was established in 2007. OLLI programs bring the joy and stimulation of lifelong learning to adults age 50 and better who are interested in university-level education without the pressure of course credits or grades.

Transportation:Monterey-Salinas Transit provides bus service to the greater Monterey area. Monterey Airbus offers shuttle van service to San Jose (SJC) and San Francisco (SFO) International Airports.

Travel and tourism: Fisherman's Wharf is the launch pad for whale-watching trips, and 20 minutes to the north in Moss Landing, Sanctuary Cruises operates highly recommended whale- watching and dolphin-spotting cruises led by marine biologists. The National Steinbeck Center and the ecoconscious Monterey Bay are other notable attractions. Fine dining options featuring fresh seafood abound.
