Norwalk is a coastal city bounded on the north by New Canaan and Wilton and on the South and East by Long Island Sound. Once nicknamed "Oyster Town," Norwalk holds an annual Oyster Festival each September to celebrate its oyster farming industry. Population: As of 2011, Norwalk's population was 82,534 people.

Climate: Norwalk has warm to hot and humid summers, and cold snowy winters somewhat tempered by its proximity to Long Island Sound. Norwalk gets 45 inches of rain per year and snowfall of 24 inches.

Cost of living: Compared to the rest of the country, Norwalk's cost of living is 53.20% higher than the U.S. average.

Housing costs: No bargains here for retirement homes either, as the median home cost in Norwalk is $416,000.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees will want to be sure to check out the Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College.

Transportation:Norwalk Transit District's "WHEELS" buses are the primary providers of public transportation within the city. Many passenger trains provide commuter service to New York City and Newark airports.

Travel and tourism: Active retirees will appreciate the many water sports available in Norwalk including swimming, recreational boating, fishing, sailing, rowing, windsurfing, and kayaking. Some of the main attractions include The Maritime Aquarium, the Lockwood Mathews Mansion, historic South Norwalk, Sheffield Island Lighthouse, and the Norwalk Museum.
