Oakland got a jump start during the California Gold Rush when it became the main staging post for passengers and cargo journeying between the Bay Area and the Sierra foothills. As the present day county seat of Alameda County, Oakland is a central hub for a region of the San Francisco Bay Area known as the East Bay. Oakland has a lovely old downtown, with many architectural gems surviving from the early 20th century, and a sweet little saltwater lake in the heart of town. Population: Oakland’s 2010 population was 390,724.

Climate: Oakland gets 23 inches of rain per year and no snow. It has a temperate and seasonal Mediterranean climate with summers that are usually dry and warm, and winters that are mild and wet.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees 50 or older who enjoy learning in the company of fun, interesting people will enjoy The Center for Learning in Retirement. CLIR provides educational, cultural and social programs for Bay Area residents and has members from six counties.

Transportation:Retirees have three major airports of the San Francisco Bay Area to choose from: Oakland International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and San Jose International Airport. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has its headquarters in Oakland, and there are also many bus lines and a ferry service.

Travel and tourism: Oakland has always been an important African American cultural center, with music, literature and art flowing through the city’s tough veins. Oakland has a diverse population, hip arts scene, world-class attractions, abundant parks and open spaces, vibrant waterfront and lakefront, historic architecture, palate-tempting restaurants, bustling nightlife, action-packed pro sports and varied recreation options.
