Oakland got a jump start during the California Gold Rush when it became the main staging post for passengers and cargo journeying between the Bay Area and the Sierra foothills. As the present day county seat of Alameda County, Oakland is a central hub for a region of the San Francisco Bay Area known as the East Bay. Oakland has a lovely old downtown, with many architectural gems surviving from the early 20th century, and a sweet little saltwater lake in the heart of town.
