Redding California

Redding was originally called Poverty Flats during the gold rush for its lack of wealth, but today it is one of the most desirable residential areas in the country with one of the fastest percentage growth in median housing prices. Considered the ‘hub of the north state,’ Redding is the perfect ‘base camp’ for exploring the region’s natural attractions. Population: 89,861 as of the 2010 census.

Climate: Summers are hot and dry, and winter tends to be either rainy or foggy and at times snow occurs. On average Redding gets 39 inches of rain per years and snowfall is 5 inches.

Cost of living: Affordable retirement living is available here where the cost of living is 2% less than the national average.

Housing costs: Much more affordable than other urban areas in California, the median home price was $162,110 as of 2011. The median cost of a home is 48% less than the California average, and only 10% greater than the U.S. average.

Colleges and Universities: While Shasta Community College may be a good source for learning in retirement, the Shasta Library Foundation also provides programs of information, lifelong learning, inspiration and enjoyment to all members of the Redding community.

Transportation:Amtrak offers north/south service. Redding Municipal Airport has daily commercial airline passenger service via United Express. Local bus service (RABA) covers 71 square miles with 11 fixed routes.

Travel and tourism: Recent constructions like the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Exploration Park are attractions not to be missed, and the Sacramento River runs cold and swift through the center of Redding. This rich landscape is bursting with a variety of fun things to see and do both in and around Redding including world class fishing right in the heart of the city, nature tourism, shopping, sports activities, water adventures, culture and heritage opportunities.
