San Jose California

San Jose has always been in San Francisco’s shadow even though it’s a larger city and anchors Silicon Valley. Founded in 1777, San Jose is California’s oldest Spanish civilian settlement and is a culturally diverse city packed full of historic buildings, excellent museums and an impressive number of fine restaurants and funky old bars. Population: 945,942 as of the 2010 Census.

Climate: Retirees will love the climate here where there are only 15 inches of rain per year, and 277 sunny days to enjoy playing outside.

Cost of living: Retirement living in much of California is expensive. The cost of living in San Jose is 52% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: The average price of a retirement home is also expensive, 255% greater than the U.S. average. The median home cost in San Jose is $562,900.

Colleges and Universities: Created by UC Berkeley Extension, the Center for Learning in Retirement (CLIR) provides educational and cultural opportunities for people 50 and older and offers the best continuing education value in Northern California.

Transportation:Rail service is provided by Amtrak, and there are numerous commuter trains as well. San Jose International Airport is close to down town, and residents also use SFO (San Francisco International Airport).

Travel and tourism: San Jose’s nightlife district is called SOFA (South of First Area), and includes nightclubs, restaurants, galleries and the historic 1927 California Theatre. Retirees will want to check out the burgeoning business district along the Alameda, home to restaurants and cafés, and Santana Row, a contemporary development that attempts to re-create the traditional Main St formula of residences, shops and restaurants.
