San Luis Obispo grew up around a mission founded in 1772 by Padre Serra, which is still an active parish today. Located inland from the coast, SLO has a high quality of life and vibrant community spirit. Retirees may find the combination of urban amenities and relaxed rural charm an ideal balance. Population: As of 2011, San Luis Obispo's population was 43,685.

Climate: Summers are generally warm and sunny, and winters are mild although there could be freezing temperatures at times. San Luis Obispo gets 31 inches of rain per year.

Cost of living: Retirees will be pleased to know that the cost of living in San Luis Obispo is 2% less than the national average.

Housing costs: However, retirement housing will run approximately 139% greater than the U.S. average. No bargains here where the median home cost in San Luis Obispo is $498,300.

Colleges and Universities: Cal Poly Continuing Education has recently been awarded a $100,000 grant from The Bernard Osher Foundation to expand its OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) programs. This amazing organization provides a variety of university-level intellectual opportunities and classes to those 50 and over who are retired or semi-retired.

Transportation:Private air service and non-stop commercial air service to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix are available at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. Amtrak offers daily rail service. Bicycling is a popular method of getting around town, and priority is given to bicycle traffic with a special bicycle traffic signal, one of only a few in the U.S.

Travel and tourism: Retirees won’t want to miss Thursdays in SLO, when the famous farmers market (5-9pm) turns the down town into a giant street party. Food on the barbecue, plus live music and entertainment make this a lively evening. San Luis Obispo has reasonably priced accommodations and proximity to beaches, state parks and Hearst Castle making it a popular stopover between L.A. and San Francisco.
