Springfield Illinois


Springfield is probably best known as the home of one of the most famous historic figures in the world, Abraham Lincoln. It is the state capital of Illinois, thanks to the political efforts of a group called "The Long Nine," because the nine delegates to the legislature who fought for Springfield were all over 6' in height. Population: Springfield’s population was 117,400 at the most recent census.

Climate: Springfield has hot, humid summers and cold, rather snowy winters with large numbers of tornadoes. It gets 35 inches of rain per year, and 22 inches of snow on average.

Cost of living: An affordable retirement destination, the cost of living in Springfield is 10% less than the national average.

Housing costs: Retirement homes are also a bargain, at 29% less than the national average. The median home cost in Springfield is $110,600.

Colleges and Universities: Lincoln Land Community College’s Academy of Lifelong Learning provides many programs of interest to people of retirement age. People age 50 or better are welcomed to become members of this self-governing learning community.

Transportation:Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is Springfield’s link to other international gateway airports. Amtrak offers daily stops in Springfield between both Chicago and St. Louis, and Greyhound Bus Lines also serves the Springfield area. Springfield Mass Transit District provides public transportation on 17 daytime fixed routes throughout Springfield.

Travel and tourism: As Mr. Lincoln’s Hometown, Springfield hosts visitors from all over the world who come to experience the Lincoln tradition. History buffs will enjoy the many museums and historical sites detailing the life of our nation's most beloved president. As for the arts, the list includes the Hoogland Center for the Arts, New Salem Visitor Center Theatre, Springfield Theatre Centre, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Muni Opera, and theatre in the Park at New Salem.
