When prospectors discovered gold in California in 1849, St Louis became the “Gateway to the West” for get-rich-quick dreamers. Charles Lindbergh flew the first nonstop, solo transatlantic flight in the Spirit of St Louis, named for this far-sighted town that funded the aircraft. The iconic Gateway Arch seen in a million pictures is even more impressive in person. Population: 319,294 as of the 2010 U.S. Census with a Metropolitan Statistical Area population of 2,812,896.
Climate: St. Louis has four distinct seasons, and is subject to both cold Arctic air and hot, humid tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. St. Louis gets 39 inches of rain per year and snowfall is 8 inches.
