Tallahassee is the site of some very momentous historical events such as the 1865 reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 1956 bus boycott that resulted in the abolishment of segregated seating on public transportation. Population: Tallahassees population recorded by the 2010 U.S. Census was 181,376, and the metropolitan area was 367,413. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 16.57 percent.

Tallahassee has long valued higher learning, as Florida State University had its early beginning in 1851. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, established in 1887, is the oldest historically black public university in Florida.
